The eco-lodge was opened in 1998 and has seven bungalows with all the latest eco-technology from solar lighting and water heaters, to compost toilets and natural air conditioning. Chumbe Island is famous for its snorkelling as it boasts one of the most pristine coral reefs in East Africa, which has been actively protected since 1994. Many guests visit to go on marine safari as the reef contains more than two hundred different species of hard corals and four hundred and twenty three species of fish. The coral rag forest has a nature trail where the protected Ader’s Duikers (antelopes) live alongside the rare and nocturnal Coconut crabs. Interesting birds, butterflies and bats can also be seen. Guests enjoy a Swahili/ European fusion of cuisine cooked by our professional staff. Tea, coffee and local herb teas are always available and our head chef is famous for producing excellent desserts alongside his beautifully presented salads and main dishes. Everything on Chumbe Island is designed to fully protect the fragile nature of this island reserve, employ local staff, respect local culture and promote environmental education. The project has not for profit objectives. Facilities
